<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Lis and I have been friends for about as long as our eldest sons\u2019 age (who are also friends):\u00a0 35 years.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Wow, 35 years seems like a long time, but it really isn&#8217;t. \u00a0 So what does Lis have to do with the Folk Festival poster? \u00a0 Lis lead me into designing the 37th Annual Alaska Folk Festival poster.<\/p>\n<p>Last Fall, Lis and I were thinking about the Alaska Folk Festival\u2019s request for their annual folk festival which always happens in the early Spring.\u00a0 2011 would be the 37<sup>th<\/sup> year.\u00a0 Being recently divorced, with a large divorce debt, she encouraged me to make a few dollars creating this year\u2019s Folk Festival poster.\u00a0 We threw around a few ideas.\u00a0 Lis insisted on having something that reflected the unique environment of Alaska \u2013 like glaciers, bald eagles, spectacular mountains, big rivers, etc. \u00a0 She mentioned icebergs that have musical instruments sticking out of them\u2026and as soon as she said that, I exclaimed \u201chey, what about icebergs that ARE the musical instruments!?\u00a0 That&#8217;s IT!\u201d\u00a0 For a moment, we stared at one another, then laughed\u2026I give her the credit.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1578\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blogblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Folk_Fest_Poster_3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1578\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1578\" title=\"Folk_Fest_Poster_3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blogblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Folk_Fest_Poster_3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"375\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Folk_Fest_Poster_3.jpg 375w, https:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Folk_Fest_Poster_3-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1578\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 37th Annual Alaska Folks Festival poster design by Clarissa Rizal - April 2011<\/p><\/div>\n<p>In the 1980s to early 1990\u2019s, my ex-husband and I used to hand-silkscreen the Folk Festival posters, a limited edition of 200.\u00a0 He was the designer, I was the assistant printer and would occasionally consult with him on the designs.\u00a0 The last poster he designed was for the 25<sup>th<\/sup> Folk Festival (12 years ago), a design influenced by the Russian-orthodox icons, a Raven playing a balalaika &#8211; the painting was done in gold leaf.\u00a0 You can check out all his old posters on the Alaska Folk Festival website.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1579\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blogblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Folk_Fest_Poster_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1579\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1579\" title=\"Folk_Fest_Poster_1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blogblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Folk_Fest_Poster_1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Folk_Fest_Poster_1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/Folk_Fest_Poster_1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1579\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Clarissa painting the folk festival poster <\/p><\/div>\n<p>The acrylic painting was painted on 300-lb. watercolor paper.\u00a0 I do not consider myself a painter of this kind.\u00a0 Yet, I&#8217;ll try my hand at whatever, even if I think I will fail.\u00a0 My daughter Ursala, pointed out that my design perspective was off and I had to tweak it a bit (you can see that in the rough draft below).\u00a0 Painting the musical instruments to look like musical instruments was a challenge; the festival is free and runs the entire week through Sunday, April 17th. \u00a0\u00a0 There are the usual items on sale sporting the design; all except the mugs and hats.\u00a0 They could not figure out what aspect of the poster to place on these two items so they drafted up nice-looking wording with an image of fireweed.\u00a0 It looks good.\u00a0 The stock of T-shirts, sweatshirts, and even babies&#8217;
