{"id":2314,"date":"2012-04-03T18:27:20","date_gmt":"2012-04-03T14:27:20","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blogblog\/?p=2314"},"modified":"2012-04-03T18:39:20","modified_gmt":"2012-04-03T14:39:20","slug":"tlingit-elder-frank-johnson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blog\/2012\/04\/tlingit-elder-frank-johnson\/","title":{"rendered":"Tlingit Elder Frank Johnson"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"attachment_2315\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blogblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/FrankJohnson1972.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2315\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2315\" title=\"FrankJohnson1972\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blogblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/FrankJohnson1972.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"262\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2315\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tlingit Elder Frank Johnson in 1972 - photo by Richard Dauenhauer<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I first met Frank when I was 16 back in 1972.\u00a0 Gilbert Lucero (from Angoon, Alaska &#8211; originally from Salinas, California) was the director of the &#8220;Totem Center&#8221; (Juneau, Alaska), a place for young Native people to begin to learn more about their culture because at that time many of us didn&#8217;t even know we belonged to a distinct indigenous peoples.\u00a0 In fact, I didn&#8217;t even know there was a word called &#8220;native.&#8221;\u00a0 Gilbert had invited three men to spend a month teaching classes to young Native children; those three men were:\u00a0 Cy Peck, Sr. (from Angoon, who taught the Native history and ways of being; Cy was also Gilbert&#8217;s mentor), Harry K.
