soft sculpture doll recently completed by Clarissa Rizal &#8212; copyright 2016<\/p><\/div>\n<p>My \u201cChilkat Storyteller\u201d is my donation for an exhibit of contemporary Alaska Native art opening in France on June 24th. \u00a0It was inspired by the pueblo storyteller dolls made of their local clay. \u00a0The first contemporary storyteller was made by Helen Cordero of the Cochiti Pueblo in 1964 in honor of her grandfather, who was a tribal storyteller. \u00a0It is basically a figure of a storyteller, usually a man or a woman and always with its mouth open. \u00a0It is surrounded by figurines of children (and sometimes other things) which represent those who are listening to the storyteller.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_6262\" style=\"width: 673px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blogblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_54581.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6262\" class=\"wp-image-6262 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blogblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_54581.jpg\" alt=\"IMG_5458\" width=\"663\" height=\"800\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_54581.jpg 663w, https:\/\/www.clarissarizal.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/IMG_54581-249x300.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 663px) 100vw, 663px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-6262\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">back view of &#8220;Chilkat Storyteller&#8221; wearing miniature Ravenstail\/Chilkat robe &#8212; by Clarissa Rizal &#8212; copyright 2016<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">My \u201cChilkat Storyteller&#8221; is a self-portrait with my 7 grandchildren. \u00a0Though instead of clay figurines, the main body of the doll is made with shreds of yellow cedar bark interior with black felted merino wool exterior. \u00a0She sits approximately 7&#8243; high and wears a miniature Ravenstail\/Chilkat robe. \u00a0All 7 of her grandchildren are felted wool in our traditional colors of black, natural, yellow and blue. \u00a0Made with lots of love, I laughed while creating\u00a0each figurine knowing the personality of each child, affectionately I called out my knick names while making each:<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">* The black one on bottom right is the oldest,<b> SikiKwaan<\/b> \u00a0(Lily\u2019s oldest daughter); very thoughtful, protective one<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">* \u00a0The blue one on top right is second oldest, <b>Andoopoo<\/b> (Kahlil\u2019s daughter); the adventurer outdoors gal<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">* \u00a0The white one on the bottom left is third oldest, <b>Ashuwa<\/b> (Ursala\u2019s oldest daughter); kind, caretaking artist<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">* \u00a0The yellow one on the left arm is fourth, <b>Ajuju<\/b> (Lily\u2019s 2nd child; only grandson); the compassionate one<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">* \u00a0The white one on top of the head, <b>Wasichu<\/b> (Lily\u2019s adopted child); spirits rebellious<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">* \u00a0The blue one on bottom left, <b>Bulleit <\/b>(Ursala\u2019s youngest); no fear, dare devil innocence<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">* \u00a0The yellow one on bottom right, <b>OneFootOneKnee or Inipi<\/b> (Lily\u2019s youngest);
